5 stunning winter destinations that are perfect for a last-minute break

September 05, 2025

It’s not too late to book a holiday to explore a new destination in 2025. In fact, the colder months could be the perfect time to jet off to admire incredible winter vistas.

If you need some winter destination inspiration, here are five options that could leave you in awe.

1. Dolomites, Italy

The Italian Dolomites boast natural beauty no matter the season you visit. But the mountain range looks magical when there’s fresh snow and dramatic sunsets, and you can even try snowshoeing on trails to fully embrace the winter season.

The good news is that picturesque spots that are usually crowded in the summer months, like Lake Braies, are far more peaceful when the mercury drops. So, you’ll be able to explore at your own pace and find some hidden gems where you can sample delicious dishes that often blend Austrian and Italian flavours.

If you love to visit a Christmas market, heading to the Dolomites before the end of the year could immerse you in the festive atmosphere as you browse handcrafted goods.

Holidaymakers who want to get active will have plenty of options too. From early December, there are lots of places to ski or snowboard, from trails perfect for beginners to those that offer a challenge amid the dramatic peaks.

2. Banff National Park, Canada

If you’re itching to travel long haul, why not consider Canada’s oldest national park?

Banff National Park is at the heart of the magnificent Canadian Rockies, so you can expect excellent mountain views and turquoise lakes. During the winter, you can hike to frozen waterfalls and then relax in a hot spring.

While grizzly and black bears are typically less active in winter, you still have a chance to spot incredible Canadian wildlife as you explore this area. If you’re lucky, you could see moose, elk, coyotes, and wolves.

If you want a slower pace to your holiday, attend the ice carving festival, take a historic tour, or sit back and enjoy the views from a horse-drawn carriage.

You should note that some areas of Banff National Park are closed during the winter months to protect wildlife. So, be sure to check that the sights you’re looking forward to seeing will be accessible before booking your trip.

3. Lapland, Finland

You might associate Lapland with young families, and if you want to treat children, there’s certainly plenty to keep them entertained, but this Finnish destination also has a lot to offer adults.

Lapland’s position in the Arctic Circle means you have a chance to see the famous northern lights. Some amazing accommodation options could mean you can experience the light show without leaving your cosy room, from glass igloos to luxury treehouses.

Taking a husky or reindeer sleigh ride is an excellent way to take in the wilderness, including forests and frozen lakes. Or if you want to whiz through the landscape, a snowmobile safari is an option, followed by a trip to a traditional sauna, of course.

4. Japanese Alps, Japan

When you think of incredible sights in Japan, the iconic Mount Fuji or cherry blossom season might spring to mind, but overlooking the Japanese Alps would mean missing out.

The series of mountain ranges – known as the Hida, Kiso, and Akaishi – bisects the main Island of Japan, Honshu. The snow-tipped peaks, teal rivers, and thick pine forests make it a great holiday spot for nature lovers.

The area is known for heavy snowfall, so you’re almost guaranteed breathtaking winter views. The historic towns in the Japanese Alps look particularly picturesque during the winter months. Takayama is a must-visit if you want to explore the history and culture of Japan. The old town is beautifully preserved with Edo-period architecture.

You can also embrace onsen culture by relaxing in a hot spring (onsen) surrounded by snow-covered mountains – it’s the perfect way to unwind.

5. New York, USA

If you prefer the hustle and bustle of a big city over nature, New York, USA, makes an exceptional winter destination. The city truly embraces the festive spirit, as parts of the city transform into a magical winter wonderland with window displays, ice rinks, and more popping up across New York.

Of course, there are plenty of iconic spots to visit in New York, including the Empire State Building and Central Park, and an abundance of museums and galleries if you want to take in some culture.

While still busy, compared to other seasons, New York is quieter in the winter months with fewer tourists, especially if you visit after the festive celebrations have ended.

What our clients say

The people we help are at the heart of what we do. Here are some of their testimonials.

I would highly recommend Darius and John. I’ve used a financial adviser previously and could never get in contact with them when I needed their help. Stratton Wealth Management have been excellent from the start. They are always available to talk, and they also don’t talk in financial jargon!

I feel I have been fully involved in all decision making, and the company's highly skilled advisers have shown commitment and patience in any dealings I have had with them. I have also always found them to be easily accessible for any discussion I may require.

As a business owner and father of four children, finances are usually the last thing we think about. Stratton oversees and manages our finances, both in terms of advice for my business and our personal investments. It is comforting to know that our retirement, investment and life insurance planning has been taken care of. Darius and John are always so efficient in dealing with our affairs. As someone with no real understanding of the ins and outs, it has been fantastic to have experts giving us great advice and making sure our best interests are always the top priority.

I knew I needed to begin saving and planning for the future but didn’t know where to start. Stratton helped me to understand my finances and put together a savings plan that is affordable and works for me. I now have and an ISA and a pension, and whilst retirement is many years away, I have the peace of mind that I am saving for my future. I look forward to working with them for many years to come.

Many thanks indeed for your in depth report for my client Mrs H – it is most thorough and above all readable. This might sound particularly strange; however you may well gather that in my profession we see many such reports, and I often feel that if the adviser fills it with charts and graphs it evidences a level of research. In truth most of what is produced is readily obtainable from the internet.

I would like to thank you (and your organisation) for your prompt and professional attention to my requirements on behalf of my client. As a practice we shall definitely be putting Stratton Wealth Management on our “preferred supplier list".
